"As Mayor, I will create an Office of Sustainability
to update and initiate implementation of the Sustainable Action Plan.
I will be the leader who works to ensure environmental responsibility,
starting with the city government."
Yesterday was Earth Day! To celebrate Earth Day, I want to discuss environmental sustainability and how we can create a greener Spokane. Some will tell you that cities have no role in our environment. This is not true. The city is one of the largest employers in the region, what we do internally matters. These issues require a strong local government’s resolve.
At this point, we should all be able to accept the harsh realities of climate change that are confronting all of us.
A cleaner, greener Spokane is the future I am fighting for.
When I envision Spokane at its fullest potential, I see a city that cares about its environment, a city driven by its people, a city willing to take action.
For the past 7+ years, I have been committed to creating a better, more sustainable environment for the citizens of our beautiful city:
- I sponsored a law to create a City of Spokane purchasing preference for recycled products and materials, and led an effort to ban city use and purchase of harmful chemicals and insecticides.
- I sponsored the ordinance to require all new and major renovations of City of Spokane buildings become LEED Certified.
- I led an effort to pass Urban Farming Initiatives, because more locally grown food helps the economy and increases community.
- I sponsored ordinances to waive permit fees for solar energy systems and electric vehicle charging stations, create the City of Spokane’s Carbon Emissions Reduction Goals, and to divest City of Spokane funds from fossil fuel companies.
We have made progress, but in order to make a lasting impact it will take strong leadership dedicated to finding solutions to ensure a better Spokane. I will work to identify programs and strategies to address the recycling issues facing our community. I will also create a department of transportation inclusive of ALL modes of transportation, not just motor vehicles.
Most significantly, as Mayor, I will create an Office of Sustainability to update and initiate implementation of the Sustainable Action Plan.
I will be the leader who works to ensure environmental responsibility, starting with the city government.
I will be that Mayor.
Thank you for your support,
